Frequently Asked Questions

What are the hospital's volunteer hour requirements?
A volunteer typically contributes between two and four hours each week.  However, we are flexible and will try to accommodate your schedule. The minimum requirement is six hours a month, following an initial commitment of 6 months.

When do you need volunteers?
Our greatest need for volunteers is Monday–Friday before 6 p.m. We also have some volunteer opportunities and shifts we are looking to fill immediately. You can find those at the bottom of the main Volunteers page under "Urgent Needs."

How old must I be to volunteer?
The minimum age requirement for a hospital volunteer is 13 years of age.  These students however, need to have graduated the eighth-grade and are entering high school (with a 3.0 or greater GPA) in order to be eligible. Visitors with the Big Heart for Little Hands Program need to be at least 10.

After I complete my application, how long will it be until I can start volunteering?
Following health screening clearance, volunteers usually start within that same month.  Since we are a children's hospital, it is our responsibility to ensure the safety of our patients through a thorough screening process. Individuals with health screening documentation usually complete the screening process in a shorter time period.

What kind of training will I receive?
All volunteers will attend a four hour New Volunteer Orientation. In addition, further training may be required depending on the department or service area you select.

Do I need to be CPR certified?
No

I’m getting ready to complete a service project or I need service hours through my school. Is that the same as volunteering?
Students are accepted for service project or service hour volunteering on a space available basis. Students will need to make an initial commitment to 6 months of volunteering.

Students needing fewer than 10 hours may contact the Child Life Big Hearts for Little Hands Program at (559) 353-5876 for availability.

Can my group/organization/school/company come for one day and visit the children?
Groups or individuals wanting to visit the hospital on a one-time or infrequent basis may contact the Child Life Big Heart for Little Hands Program at (559) 353-5876.

We do offer several other opportunities that support the hospital’s mission such as fundraising activities. For more information on fundraising opportunities, contact the Children’s Hospital Foundation at (559) 353-7100.
