Accreditation & Awards

Children’s is accredited and recognized by many agencies and organizations, including:

The Joint Commission

The Joint CommissionWe are a Joint Commission Accredited Hospital and Home Care Agency. The Joint Commission’s accreditation is a nationwide seal of approval. Children’s was re-accredited on July 28, 2006, meeting all Joint Commission standards in safety and quality of care. We are currently eligible for our next survey.

Magnet Nursing - The American Nurses Credentialing Center

Magnet NursingWe are a designated Magnet Nursing Hospital, an award given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). This prestigious award recognizes the highest levels of excellence in nursing. Children’s Hospital was designated a Magnet Nursing hospital in April 2004 by the ANCC and redesignated in 2008. Children’s was the first children’s hospital west of the Rockies to receive Magnet designation. We continue to be one of only 5% of hospitals in the nation that have Magnet Recognition. Magnet is the highest nursing benchmark in the nation.

CARF

CARFThe only free-standing pediatric rehabilitation center in California accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), Children’s is one of only two free-standing pediatric rehab centers on the west coast certified by CARF.

We are accredited for Pediatric/Family Centered Rehabilitation and Comprehensive Medical Inpatient Rehabilitation by CARF, acknowledging compliance with stringent national standards for rehabilitation facilities. The latest accreditation is the seventh consecutive Three-Year Accreditation outcome that the international accrediting commission has awarded the Hospital.

The Leapfrog Group

The Leapfrog GroupWe are proud to have been recognized by the LeapFrog Group with an award for Excellence in Patient Safety and Health Care Quality.

Children’s is one of only 22 hospitals across California recognized as a high performing hospital by four of the state’s leading health plans – Aetna, Blue Shield of California, CIGNA HealthCare of California and UnitedHealthcare – for its outstanding commitment to health care quality and patient safety.
The Hospital received this recognition in 2006 based on results from the
Leapfrog Hospital Quality and Safety Survey.

Children’s is among the top 10 percent of 216 hospitals statewide that responded to the Leapfrog Survey, and holds contracts with three or more of the health plans.

Children’s received this recognition for its outstanding scores for instituting or making great strides in achieving the Leapfrog Group’s standards for four measures of hospital quality and safety:
Computer physician order entry – using computers to enter medication orders.
Evidence-based hospital referral – choosing hospitals with extensive experience and the best results with certain high-risk surgeries and conditions such as coronary artery bypass, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and high-risk births.
Intensive care unit (ICU) staffing by physicians experienced in critical care medicine.
The Leapfrog Safe Practices Score – based on the National Quality Forum-endorsed Safe Practices for Better Healthcare – which includes 27 additional practices to reduce preventable medical mistakes.

This recognition is part of an effort by health plans to reward and recognize hospitals, like Children’s, for efforts to improve patient safety and the quality of health care. It comes at a time when the majority of American health care remains far below obtainable levels of basic safety, quality, and overall costumer value.
