Board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Donna Carey joined Children’s Hospital in November 2008, providing pediatric hospitalist services for Specialty Medical Group (SMG), Children’s physician partner, at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, Calif. Prior to joining Children’s, Dr. Carey was the Medical Director at Bayview Hunters Point Health and Environmental Resource Center in San Francisco, Calif. She has about a decade of experience, having served as a pediatric hospitalist with San Ramon Regional Medical Center and general pediatrician at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, Calif.
Dr. Carey is very active in the community. In association with GlaxoSmithKline and the National Medical Association, she served as the Oakland chairperson for a national campaign to end uncontrolled asthma and disparities in the treatment of asthma within the African-American community. She was also highly involved in her church, True Vine Ministries, in Oakland where she served as Director of Health Ministry. In that role, she organized and coordinated an annual community health fair that provided free health screenings, food and clothing to more than 1,000 residents. She also developed and facilitated quarterly health forums on pertinent issues for adults and children such as obesity, heart disease and breast and prostate health.
Dr. Carey received her medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. She completed her pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital and Research Center at Oakland. She completed a fellowship in adolescent medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
