An expert in pediatric critical care, anesthesiology and pediatrics, Dr. David Merzel is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology with special qualification in Critical Care Medicine, the American Board of Pediatrics, with specialty certification in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. He is a member of several professional societies including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia and the Society for Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Merzel has been published in peer reviewed journals including Pediatric Emergency Care and the Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics.

David Ira Merzel, MDDr. Merzel has been with Children’s Hospital Central California since 1988. An active member of Children’s medical staff, he was a member of the Cardiac Anesthesia Team, Chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and served in an administrative capacity as Medical Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children’s.

As a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco-Fresno, Dr. Merzel has taught on topics including Pulmonary Hemorrhage, Use and Selection of Inotropes and Reducing Ventilation Associated with Pneumonia.

Dr. Merzel attended medical school at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He completed an internship and residency in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he was Chief Resident. Dr. Merzel is fellowship trained in pediatric critical care by the University of Michigan Hospital. Dr. Merzel went on to receive additional specialty medical training by completing a residency in anesthesiology in the Department of Anesthesiology at Darmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, New Hampshire and a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Children’s Hospital Boston in Massachusetts.
