A pediatric hospitalist, Dr. Sarah Smith joined Children’s Hospital in June 2007. Board certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr.
Smith has been a member of several professional organizations including the American Osteopathic Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association and the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine.
Dr. Smith’s interests include diabetes, endocrinology, guide dogs, medical anthropology, osteopathic medicine, hospitalist medicine, pediatrics and breastfeeding. She developed and coordinated Project Pecho, a peer support and information group for breastfeeding mothers in an underserved clinic. Her research interests include hypoglycemia detection by guide dogs in which she researched the reliability and sensitivity of dogs trained to assist children with type 1 diabetes.
Dr. Smith received her medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif., where she was a teaching fellow (teaching first and second-year students) in the Department of Osteopathic Medicine before completing her residency in pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco-Fresno Medical Education Program. After completing her pediatric residency, she served as chief resident in several inpatient and outpatient settings, supervising both house staff and medical students. She also provided urgent care and services in the Emergency Department.
