Children's Hospital patient Melik Smith enjoyed a special night recently as he stepped on to the Fresno State football field at his first ever college football game. The Fresno State Bulldogs were getting ready to play against the New Mexico State Aggies. Melik was escorted to the center of the field at the start of the game to join in the coin toss as the Children's Hospital Kid Captain.
Wearing his own jersey, from the football game he played in earlier that day, Melik walked on to the field with pride and confidence. He was excited to report back to his classroom on Monday and show proof to his skeptical classmates who couldn’t believe that he would get to help with the coin toss.
Melik was full of excitement after his "fifteen seconds of fame" and so grateful to Children’s Hospital for all of its wonderful care. The Pulmonologists at Children’s help Melik keep his asthma under control so he can play football himself.
Melik and his family watched the Bulldogs from the stands as the team defeated the Aggies 33-10. Children's Hospital and Fresno State enjoy a unique partnership with Kid Captains at all Fresno State football home games this season. Like Melik, the kids will join the officials on the field for the coin toss at the start of each game.
