Children’s Focuses Education on Childhood Obesity
The percentage of overweight children in the United States is growing at an alarming rate, with one out of three kids now considered overweight or obese. In Central California, we see firsthand the harmful effects of obesity in the children we serve. To provide pediatricians useful information to help them manage this escalating condition in their practice, our medical staff committed to developing and presenting a special conference on this important subject.
Their collaborative effort resulted in the introduction of a half-day, hands-on interactive symposium that explores the benefits of a family-centered, primary-care approach to tackling childhood obesity. Since the conference series began last year, more than 140 participants have already attended the event. Offered in locations convenient to pediatricians throughout Central California, the next series is scheduled in the spring.
With the help of Children’s clinical staff, including pediatric endocrinologists, pediatric cardiologists, pediatric gastroenterologists, and pediatric dieticians, educators and exercise physiologists, participants look at elements and tools needed to develop an effective primary-care strategy focused on identifying and addressing obesity at an individual level. They also discuss how to work constructively and sensitively with patient families to achieve sustainable change.
Numerous conference evaluations and comments from attendees demonstrate the value of this medical education event. Some examples include:
“Great lineup of professionals. Great tools. One of the best conferences Children’s has developed. Thank you!”
- Pediatrician, Sutter Gould Medical Foundation
“Awesome! Awesome! Thank you!”
– Pediatrician, Kaiser Medical Foundation
“The program is excellent! Practical. Relevant to office practice.”
– Pediatrician, Hill Physician Group
Two workshops on this topic will be held on April 28, 2012, in San Luis Obispo and May 19, 2012, at Children’s Hospital Central California, Madera. There is no charge to attend. Participants receive four hours of Continued Medical Education credit, a participant workbook, and a pediatric obesity toolkit to help children and families establish or reestablish healthy eating and lifestyle choices.
